Key Milestones in the History of the Gold Price

For most of the twentieth century, gold did not have a market price in the way we understand the term today. Governments fixed it, defended the fix, and occasionally changed it by decree. The free-floating gold price that investors now watch every day is barely fifty years old, and its history is punctuated by a handful of turning points that still shape how the metal behaves. Knowing them puts any current price in context and reveals how long both rallies and corrections have typically lasted.

The fixed era

Under the classical gold standard of the late nineteenth century, major currencies were defined as fixed weights of gold, and the dollar price was set at $20.67 per ounce. That figure held, with interruptions during wartime, until 1934, when Franklin Roosevelt devalued the dollar by raising the official price to $35. Private ownership of gold bullion by Americans had been prohibited the year before, and that prohibition lasted four decades.

After the Second World War, the Bretton Woods system tied other currencies to the dollar and the dollar to gold at that same $35. Foreign central banks could redeem dollars for metal, and for a while the arrangement held. By the late 1960s, however, US deficits and inflation had created a growing gap between the official price and what gold fetched in private markets abroad.

1971 and the 1970s surge

In August 1971, President Nixon suspended the dollar’s convertibility into gold, ending Bretton Woods and freeing the price. What followed was one of the great bull markets in financial history. Gold rose from $35 to over $800 by January 1980, a more than twenty-fold increase, driven by soaring inflation, oil shocks, and collapsing confidence in paper currency. Americans regained the right to own bullion at the end of 1974, and demand surged.

The 1980 peak, adjusted for inflation, remained the all-time high in real terms for decades. It also marked the beginning of a long decline.

The twenty-year bear market

Under Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker, interest rates rose to unprecedented levels in the early 1980s, inflation was crushed, and real yields turned sharply positive. Gold fell by more than half within two years and then drifted lower for the better part of two decades. Central banks sold reserves, investors lost interest, and by 1999 the price had fallen to around $250. Reviewing the full gold price history shows how long that stretch lasted: an investor who bought at the 1980 peak did not see the price recover in nominal terms until 2008.

That period is the most important cautionary tale in gold’s history. It demonstrates that the metal can underperform for a generation when real rates are high and confidence in currency is strong.

The modern bull market

The turn came in the early 2000s. The dot-com crash, the September 11 attacks, rising deficits, and a weakening dollar revived demand, and gold rose steadily through the decade. The 2008 financial crisis and the quantitative easing that followed accelerated the trend, and the price crossed $1,000 in 2008 and approached $1,900 in 2011.

A correction followed, taking gold back near $1,050 by late 2015, before a new advance began. The pandemic era, with rates cut to zero and enormous fiscal stimulus, pushed gold to fresh records, and the years since have seen it climb further on central bank buying and geopolitical tension. Each cycle has had its own catalyst, but the common thread is monetary policy and trust in paper money. Seen across the full arc, gold’s history is a story about what happens when that trust wavers.

Key takeaways

  • Gold was fixed at $20.67 and then $35 for most of the twentieth century.
  • The 1970s produced a twenty-fold rally; the 1980s and 1990s produced a twenty-year bear market.
  • The modern bull market began in the early 2000s and has been driven by monetary policy and central bank demand.
  • Both rallies and corrections have historically lasted years, not months.
